Chujiro Hayashi

  1878 - 1940

Chujiro Hayashi was the main disciple of Mikao Usui.

Hayashi's Life: Hayashi was born on 15th September 1878 in Tokyo. He was an ex-naval officer in Japanese Imperial Navy and a Naval Doctor. He graduated from Navy School in 1902. He started his Reiki training with Mikao Usui when he was 47, i.e. in 1925.

After the completion of his training he left Usui School and started a small clinic in Tokyo with 8 beds and 16 reiki practitioners. During this time he created a 40 page reiki training manual named 'Usui Reiki Hikkei' with Dr Usui's help and approval. Five years after the death of Dr. Mikao Usui i.e. in 1931, he started his own reiki society named 'Hayashi Reiki Kenyu-kai', which means Hayashi Reiki Research Center. Hayashi made some major changes in the Usui system of reiki. During this period he initiated 17 reiki masters including Mrs. Hawayo Takata.

Dr. Chujiro Hayashi took his own life by committing Seppuku or hara-kiri at the age of 62 on 10th May 1940. After that Dr Hayashi's wife Chie continued teaching as the President of his school.

Hayashi's Works: He brought two modifications in the Usui system of reiki. First of all, he started the hand positions used in reiki healing sessions; before that Dr. Usui used head positions and the specific problem areas on the body only. Second, he changed the focus of reiki training. Dr. Mikao Usui used reiki primarily as a personal spiritual development tool, but Dr. Hayashi changed the focus to healing - healing of the body and the mind.
